Airtel Broadband – Just avoid it !!!

Some time back when i shifted to my new residence, I was searching for reliable broadband (BB) service provider….I explored Reliance, Tata, YOU, Tikona, Railtel & Airtel…i kept BSNL out of research as i remembered my horrible service experience with BSNL during my childhood days, some 20 years ago…Those days any complaint resolution used to take 15-20 days + 50 Rs as Chai Paani (Another name for bribe in North India)….Anyways Post research i found that YOU, Tata & Tikona don’t provide service in my apartment & Reliance Broadband through wireless was BIG NO from all users….

I was left with Railtel and Airtel…I read some reviews on Railtel & almost everyone recommended the same. I got Railtel BB installed & was very happy with their services..My happiness only lasted for 3 months as they decided to wind up their services from my complex becoz of handful connections in 600+ flats complex….What i felt was that they lacked skills in marketing else their services were damn good…This also proves that even a good product cannot be sold without Marketing (All Marketing professionals must be smiling & feeling proud after reading this).

Next option left was Airtel Broadband (Still no consideration for BSNL), Also the tenants who were staying earlier in same flat before we moved in had Airtel Broadband connection so I thought the installation will be fast and smooth…I called Airtel Customer Care and left my request for new Airtel Broadband Connection…I received call after 2-3 days and they told me to get in touch with local representative…

I called him next day and he came same day evening, he told me to deposit 500 Rs Installation fees.  I informed him that previous resident of same flat, had Airtel connection so installation is already done..He (Airtel) just need to Plug and Play but Airtel representative told it’s a Rule, which i fail to understand….Secondly when I checked with him on plans, he told me there is only 1 plan for new subscribers i.e. 3 months advance rental plan (upto 2Mbps speed) @ approx 800 Rs per month…I can select any other plan only after 3 Months. I was shocked to see only 1 plan for new sub, he told me that if i want Airtel service then it is the only plan available else I should look out for some other service provider…I was shocked on hearing this, my 20 years back BSNL experience was now appearing very nice to me as they never used to talk like this 20 years back when there was no competition…

Anyways I was not having any other option but to accept (Hope I would have given 2nd thought to BSNL at this juncture)…As per my plan or only plan (Written with sarcastic intention) I was promised speed of upto 2 Mbps. As a unwritten thumb rule in BB industry, I was expecting minimum 1/8th speed i.e. 250Kbps & was also confirmed at the time of installation becoz the main fiber cable (2 Mbps) from which connection is pulled out is shared between 8 users or houses so BB service provider always mention speed upto 2 Mbps i.e. if at any point if no one is using the connection then i will get speed of 2 Mbps as i am using the entire bandwidth until & unless u have dedicated Line like Fiber to Home plans of BSNL then u will get assured speed of what is being promised…Now in shared plan if 2 users are using the connection out of 8 then bandwidth of 2 Mbps we will be equally divided between 2 @ 1 Mbps each…In a nutshell even with shared connection download speed of BB connection should never fall below 250 Kbps under 2 Mbps plan…

Now from day 1, I was getting a speed of less than 100 Kbps and during night time, I used to get 150 Kbps which was not sufficient for me…I complained numerous times and I got quite exciting  excuses from visiting engineer every time…Some of them I am listing down

  1. RAM is not sufficient: I was having 1 GB and I upgraded to 2 GB
  2. Processor is Slow: I was having Pentium IV and I upgraded to Core 2 Duo
  3. My C drive is full: I moved files from C to E drive and upgraded hard disk to 160 GB

Even after spending some 15k plus, my desktop speed was happily stagnant @ less than 100 Kbps….It was time to get tough with these guys…Now in round 2 of complaints, they put entire onus on Modems which were provided by them only..Initially i received Beetal 220 modem and it was replaced twice then I got Beetal 110 & it was also replaced thrice but speed had decided not to move beyond 100 Kbs..Airtel feel customer is fool, when i explained them logic of sharing, the engineer excepted that I shud get minimum speed of 250 Kbps.

After One & a half years ordeal, I got rid of Airtel but my problem didn’t end here..After 2 months of disconnection, I got Bill of 2 Months..Luckily while disconnecting the connection i insisted on return receipt of Modem and Landline Instrument….Which was blessing in disguise else i was threatened of legal action if I will not pay the bill.

After that I realized my mistake of not considering BSNL initially…In my next blog I will share my amazing experience with BSNL (Was not expected at all from BSNL in my dreams) …The kind of service i was expecting from Airtel, i received it from BSNL and what i was expecting from BSNL, Airtel provided me that experience…What an irony of Life !!!!

1/8th speed is not a rule of thumb. 2Mbps stands for 2 Megabits per second. The download speed u get is 256 KiloBytes per second(KBps). See the small b and capital B.

Anyways i was looking for a good isp in kalyan, thane. Airtel is not it

I agree, 1/8th speed is not thumb rule that is why i mentioned its unwritten thumb rule. Speed also depend on line losses but i am sharing the calculation for simple understanding becoz from each router box they port out 8 connections therefore speed is divided by 1/8th if all 8 are using the connection.

Also i referred only small “b” in my post and just to add 1 Byte = 8 bit i.e. 1B = 8b.

You may try MTNL in Thane

I have taken Airtel connection around 3 months back. From the day I filled up Airtel broadband application, I am getting issues with Airtel.

First they took 2 weeks to give Airtel connection after promising that within 2 days connection will be up and running.

Once connection is setup, I starting getting frequent disconnections on my broadband and even after 3 months my problem is not solved.

Here is the preview how Airtel Customer Service works

1. Customer raise the request.

2. Airtel acknowledge it with automated mail saying within 24 Hr. problem will be resolved.

3. After 24 Hrs. someone from Airtel call to confirm the problem.

4. Once problem is confirmed, he/she says it will be assigned to engineer and someone from Airtel will come to fix the problem again within 24Hrs.

5. After 24 Hrs. technician from Airtel calls and fix time to visit the house.

6. Customer takes leave from office work and keep waiting for Airtel person to visit and no one comes.

7. Customer raised this issue again with call center

and Again the full cycle continues from point 1 without problem being looked at.

If someone is looking to take Airtel broadband, do look for other options. if nothing else is there, then only go for Airtel and don’t expect anything from Airtel.

I am from Chennai, I have taken Airtel broadband connection last night. They have provided me a series of plans. I suppose your representative is a bad guy, with sticking to the plans as executives get commission on plans that you get also.
For me they have promised 999 plan with 2MBPS 5GB unlimited FUP 512 KBPS. But, understand that offer was not available. Then they have advised one more offer 2MBPS 9GB 1099 and provided few options from which I have chosen Rs. 1199 / month with 2MBPS speed 15GB umlimited data usage.
Only issue that bothered me was they have promised that I will get a Chordless phone, which they have not provided.
Thanks / Mohan

I do agree but as as i mentioned in my post, the core issue is related to speed. Normally end user get 1/8th of promised speed. I would request you to share your review on peak hour and non-peak hour speed.

Hi Nitin,
Speed is very good with 2MbPS connection. I am very much satisfied with this. I will connect one desktop, laptop and one smartphone and this is providing me an awesome speed. I will post on this with exact amount of speed on peak and non-peak hours in due course.

Worst Airtel Broadband…Not at all recommended…even punishable

Hi,

On 5th Aug 2015, thursday I took Broadband connection CEF No TBLR7002159 from Ranganath 7022444387.

They told it will happens by Saturday 9th Aug 2015.

On sunday I called executive Ranganath, He told it will happens on Monday.

Same day I called customer care 18001030121, they also told wait for monday and let us know if not happened they will take action.

Monday I waited

Tuesday I waited, called Customer care again, this time they raised the complaint.

Wednesday I called again Ranganath he gave this number 9611191892..After calling them they told it is activated……..Surprisingly I dont have connection at all. After all listening they told they will come and install at thursday.

On thursday I called again Ranganath, and this number office 9611191892 because they told that they come in morning to install.

Thursday Morning they told, they will come and install today …….by 3:00 PM when i called again for status they are telling raise the complaint ..recklessly.

Finally Airtel office 9611191982 & Ranganath 7022444387 are not responding. Coming to customer care when ever you call new executive take up the call, asks everything, raise the complaints and tells wait, this is where headache starts ……………….no use at all……………..

what your airtel is planning to do…..

This is how they ruined my peace of mind:

For all Who feels Airtel provide a great service to the customers, pl know the quality of service as below:

Forget the performance of connection, first of all I am at trouble for the connection itself after taking the money in bangalore

I have done the biggest mistake of my life by opting for an Airtel broad band connection on 31st Aug 2015. Sales executive of the Airtel team came home, collected all the necessary documents and more importantly, for him, the money of Rs 1, 100/-

The connection need to be provided within 3 working days from then, which should be 3rd of Sep. No one turned out to do the same, and I need to do a numerous calls to your ever waiting customer care to get an update.

The list of customer complains given are 59238658; and reopening of the complaint as no one attended the same but happily closed it as resolved-59238658 and the recent one 59535322

All the insane people are reckless people who sit in the customer care center and my interaction ids with them are as below:

522247852

523803071

524046256

When ever I check with the team with the above ids, all they said is some technical issue is delaying the installation and the same will be resolved in 4-5 days which is constant for ever. Guess the timing Airtel follow is not of our planet so the 4-5 days move will take longer than 4-5 days of Earth.

Finally the wisdom dawned on Airtel; to conclude that the connection cannot be provided because of port non availability, which should have been their first check before accepting any new request; and said my money will be returned within 21 days from the 9th of Sep, as that is the day of request cancellation. I am very happy to this as those guys could come to a decision at least by then and agreed for the same.

Suddenly some witch acted on Airtel team again and they have reopened the application on 10th itself saying all the technical problems are solved and now the connection will be given in 3 working days again. I thought some extraordinary man in Airtel working on this now.

On 12th afternoon, which happens to be the 3rd working day from 10th of Sep, the same customer care executive again confirmed that before that day evening some one will come and do the installation.

Again on 13th when I tried checking for the same, the Customer care executive has again updated me the old story of Port non availability and hence the connection cannot be given now. Wisdom dawns on Airtel now and then as in the above case. So when I check for the refund of money, they says 21days from 13th/14th, which should have actually been 9th, if those guys doesn’t play this ugly dirty game of reopening the application.

To sum up the above, you guys have no clue/intelligence to understand what you speak about. No ethics to do a fair dealing and no infrastructure for a basic broad band and boast about 4G.

My recent complain number for cancellation of order is 59535322; for me I am sure this means nothing as those guys try calling me to resolve this and say, as I am not available to them it will go to resolved status even without any action(as happened with my first complaint. I feel ashamed to hear that the number is not reachable/responded when called, being it another Airtel number of mine.

No proper customer support for disconnection. During change of home I have requested for disconnection. Airtel service provider came home and collected there wifi router provided during connection. I was informed for no bill amount during disconnection from home . But bill got generated for next two month even after not using service. they have placed disconnection request in there data base only after multiple follow up. Felt cheated with bill mount which i have been forced to pay.

Airtel is THE worst telecom connection company and more than that its a cheat.

since the day i took their connection its been a roller coaster ride

1. My call has never ever been picked by airtel (Platinum) customer care

2. Service is the quickest at installation after that they are not
bothered ever time u need to get them do some service 7 days + anyone
will show up who will be most probably be totally incompetent to fix
your problem it will escalate to higher level whom he will call and then
maybe in 3 days it might get fixed

3. I had a 16 mbps plan 1300 plan and every month my bill was 1700 +

4. landline was provided by them which stopped working and they
refused to fix it and told to buy an new one (it was asking some code)

5. the landline has never been running and they customer service
person told that we will switch off its connection which they never did
even after promising me and i didnt even knew that they had kept billing
me for it

6. requested static IP which they failed to set up so told them leave
it and keep it dynamic they said ok (and kept charging me for static
IP)

7. Connection keeps disconnecting. finally after a month technician
comes and tells me oh we dont have wires capable of giving 16 mbps . i
told but i was getting the speed till now , seems cause it is only
capable of 8mbps

and thats the reason for disconnections.

8. there are many more problems but i cant list them all these are
the final ones that made me break the connection permanently ‘

9. after i told them to break my connection the next month i did not get any sms asking for bll or anything

10. then the month after i get a bill of 3000 INR (plan is 1300) they had told me they have disconnected the service

Please do not take this connection they are the worse kind of service
