LED Vs LCD – LG Vs Samsung Vs Sony – Selecting the Best

While buying a new age TV, the biggest dilemma faced by a customer is to select between LCD Vs LED TV. In big cities, you will find only LED TV’s. LCD TV is now available only in small cities and towns. On e-commerce websites, you may find both :). I will explain the reason for same later in the post. I also faced this dilemma and did a lot of research on this topic. I could not find much information from a layman perspective. There are loads of Technical Jargon to differentiate 2 technologies.

I thought of presenting the findings in a simplified manner so that layman can understand the same. To start with, i was looking for a 42 inches Full HD TV, I would like to add that if you are planning to buy Full HD TV below 40 or 42 Inch then there is no point of purchasing FULL HD LED TV. A human eye cannot find/identify the difference between HD Ready and Full HD in small screen sizes.

In 42 Inch segment, the rate differential between LCD and LED TV is between 12k-15k.  After completing my research on the internet and visiting 6-7 big retail chains, I could find only 2 differences between these 2 technologies

  1. Power consumption in LED is much less compared to LCD. In LCD power consumption is 180W and in LED, it’s 110 W
  2. LED TV is slightly slim compared to LCD TV

I checked all the available LED & LCD models of Sony, LG & Samsung (3 brands shortlisted by me). My conclusion was that there is a difference of just 5-10% in Picture quality between LED & LCD of the same brand but it all depends on the manufacturer. Just to share my findings on same

  1. LG use IPS panel which is much superior compared to PVA panels used by Samsung & Sony.
  2. PVA panel category has many sub-variants that differ in picture quality.
  3. Samsung has something called Panel Lottery system wherein only after purchasing the TV, customer know which panel he has received. It can be a Good or Bad one so it’s a lottery whereas in LG you will get IPS panel for sure.
  4. Samsung mentions mega contrast ratio for Dynamic Contrast Ratio, that is not clearly specified in real terms. On some blogs, it’s mentioned that this ratio is 60,000:1 or 70,000:1 whereas in LG, Dynamic Contrast ratio is 1,00,000:1, therefore, LG has superior Dynamic Contrast ratio based on the blogs.
  5. Another advantage of IPS panel over PVA panel is once you press the IPS panel slowly, it will not distort picture & panel is rock hard. On the other hand, PVA panels are soft panels and distort picture. PVA panels are bit elastic
  6. IPS panels have a wide viewing angle of 179 degrees compared to other panels.
  7. Please ensure that there are at least 3 HDMI ports in your shortlisted model else you will not be able to connect multiple devices simultaneously e.g. DTH, Home Theater, DVD Player etc.

Comparison of LCD and LED

I compared mid-range LCD and LED of Sony, LG and Samsung. My conclusion is as follows

  1. Sony is bit expensive compared to features provided, i ruled out it in the first round.
  2. A human eye cannot find out the difference between the LED and LCD. Therefore, there is no point in going for LED by spending 12k-15k additional.
  3. One of the leading store executives told me that there is not much difference between LCD and LED technology. It is just a backlit illumination technology. Companies are pushing and projecting LED technology as superior over LCD because margins are high in LED compared to LCD. Therefore, you will find less no of models of LCD compared to LED
  4. Buy LED only if you are planning to play Games on TV that need very high response time. For normal TV viewing, not much difference between FULL HD LCD and FULL HD LED TV
  5. Now LED is ruled out, the choice was restricted to Samsung or LG LCD TV.
  6. On 2 accounts i.e. Better Dynamic Contrast Ratio and Superior IPS panel of LG, I decided to buy LG over Samsung LCD TV.
  7. Another advantage of LG is that it’s LCD TV’s are 42 inches whereas Samsung and Sony are 40 Inch so you will get 2-inch extra viewing screen.
  8. I must say LG is Value for Money in terms of overall package i.e. have a superior panel, picture quality and features.

I am using this model from last 4 years and trust me it’s value for money & picture quality is as good as LED. As i mentioned, Human Eye cannot find the difference between LCD and LED TV.

Last but not the least when you are spending a huge amount on the purchase, please ensure you don’t get a display or used unit/piece. Some tips on the same from my end

  1. Always buy from Authorized & Trustworthy Stores like LG Shoppe, Sony Centre, Reliance Digital or Chroma
  2. Always mention to a salesperson that you need only fresh unit and you will return it back if you will get a display unit. Normally, display units are sold at 30% discount.
  3. Just check with Salesperson on the location of LG warehouse and take assurance from him that unit will be dispatched from LG warehouse. You can ascertain this at the time of delivery because Tax invoice will be issued from LG warehouse address. Please note that it will not be LG invoice but of some local dealer who is handling distributorship of LG for that area as LG cannot directly sell to the customers. Just check LG warehouse address/details online and match the address with address on Tax invoice
  4. When you receive the delivery, just check the packaging and cross check tape marks i.e. whether the tap was removed & sealed again. In demo piece, you will find multiple tape marks that can be easily identified on either top or bottom. In my case, i checked minutely and found that it is sealed only once through very thick tape that is used by LG. It should not necessarily have LG watermark else you will find cardboard layer removed if it was sealed, removed and then again sealed.
  5. The TV unit that i received, It’s manufacturing date was just 8 days back from the Date of invoice e.g. if i purchased on 19th Dec then in my case manufacturing date of TV unit was 11th Dec. Please check manufacturing date, ideally manufacturing should be between 3-4 weeks from the date of invoice
  6. Lastly, LG installation engineer showed me through MENU that usage hours is ZERO and i sigh a relief.

Update:

Based on queries on this forum, i would like to clarify following points

  1. For 3D TV, it makes sense to buy screen size of 55 inches or more.
  2. Based on reviews available, Passive 3D is better compared to Active 3D.
  3. In my personal opinion, Smart TV is a waste of money. A TV should be bought just for TV viewing. For applications, you have smartphones. Moreover, the premium paid for smart features is too high.
  4. I will not prefer extended warranty. It comes with lots of ifs and buts. If there is any manufacturing defect in LED TV, you will come to know within few months of use.
  5. If you buy online, you may get a good discount. Instead of cashback offers, you should prefer cash discount. There is a misinformation shared by offline retailers that if you will buy online then you will not get warranty or company will not install. It is totally wrong. All the vendors listed on leading e-commerce websites like Amazon or Flipkart are authorized dealers. Still if you have doubt, you can clarify from the vendor before purchase. If you get VAT paid bill then you need not worry. At the same time, You should be beware of dynamic pricing of E-Commerce.
  6. One of the key reasons for the short life of LED TV is exposure to a magnetic field, voltage fluctuation and high moisture level. Therefore, keep speakers, voltage stabilizers etc away from your LED TV. To protect TV, you can also use a surge protector.
  7. If you wish to play any particular file format on your LED TV, it is advisable to play on the demo unit in the nearby showroom before purchase. The information available on the web is not correct. In some of the cases, after purchase buyer comes to know that specific format required by him is not supported.
  8. Whenever you are comparing TV in the showroom, both the sets should be on company default settings. In order to promote a particular brand, sometimes showroom guys tweak the settings. Therefore, the picture quality of a particular brand looks superior compared to others.
  9. Last but not the least, the model availability may vary from city to city. Therefore, kindly shortlist the models available in your city before posting your query.

I removed Panasonic during initial shortlisting..The Panasonic model available in showroom was Viera 42″ LCD TV TH-L42U30D..I asked executive to plug in same full HD DTH feed in all brands and picture quality on Panasonic was not at all comparable to 42″ LCD TV’s of LG, Sony and Samsung. On analysis i observed dynamic contrast ratio (which is major contributor to great picture quality) of Panasonic was just 20,000:1

Price of Panasonic was almost same as that of price quoted for 42″ LG LCD…After removing Panasonic, Onida and Toshiba in initial screening, i shortlisted LG, Samsung & Sony for detailed analysis…Samsung never reveal Dynamic Contrast Ratio but according to information available on internet, its between 60,000:1 to 70,000:1

LG was obvious choice becoz of highest stated dynamic contrast ratio of 1,00,000:1 which implies best picture quality & being most feature rich LCD TV among all…

Good Info Nitin. I am now looking at Panasonic or LG. Panasonic has a new model TH-42ET5 (available in 47 and 55 inches too) as of June 2012. As you rightly pointed out, this uses an IPS panel and has a good wide angle view at 178 degrees. The contrast ratio offered here seems to be 4000000:1 which is very good (I am looking at 47″ version). 3D was great when I saw original 3D content played via a USB drive. Even the 720p Airtel/Tatasky HD channels appeared very good.

I am almost certain going with IPS LED LCD panel even with a passive 3D. 4 pairs of glasses are offered with the TV and it is about 1000 INR for 4 additional pairs

Study regarding after sale service by these manufacturers not only for LCD/LED but all products.may please be carried out. In my opinion LG shall be worst because in this peak summer season important spare parts like compressors for warranty period replacement are not available with service centers for weeks and LG officers/officials are incompetent to satisfy the complainants , taking action against service centers harassing the customers.

Nice article. As you rightly pointed out, LCD vs LED is marketing jargon. In fact both LCD and “LED” TVs use LCD Panels. It’s only the back-lighting that is different, CCFL vs LED. The Panels determine REAL contrast ratio (Not dynamic contrast, another scam to confuse users), Response Time (For smooth gaming and fast action), Color reproduction et-cetera and NOT backlighting.
LED Backlit TV’s advantages: 1. LED Panels definitely consume lesser power (15% – 35%) less. 2. Actually LED backlit TV’s are cheaper to manufacture, though WE pay more !
3. Brightness is usually higher, because LEDs consume less power. 4. Slimmer

I disagree with your point on LED’s advantage with Gaming. It has nothing to do with backlighting, only panel with higher refresh rate matters. Usually IPS panels are weak in this aspect. And I disagree with dynamic contrast. It is achieved by switching ON/OFF the backlighting. After couple of days you will turn it off as the realism will be missing. And most dealers project Korean brands (Sammy/LG) as better brands as they offer better margin. The best are always from Panasonic/Sharp et-all.

really Nice presentation. i would like to add 1 more point. LED are better for environment compared to LCD. LCDs have harmful chemical which may be dangerous in a small room with kids.

Dear Arjun,

I am not sure at what price u r getting above mentioned two models but just to add that both models are only HD ready but not FULL HD. Secondly both the models have very low contrast ratio of 30,000:1.

I can suggest u 32LK450, which is FULL HD with contrast ratio of 1,00,000:1. If u bargain hard u can get this model for around 28k.

Thanks Nitin. But does it really make any difference between Full HD & HD Ready for a 32″ LCD TV? and also currently I have Videocon D2H SD connection. So, Is it worth spending 6k more for Full HD? I saw the price of both LG32LK311 and LG32LK332 online which are 32K and 35K respectively. Since, I’m staying at a remote location, Here we don’t have big shops to see all the models available in market. So, I’m planning to go to Bangalore one day and buy.

Hi Arjun, Full HD or HD ready will not make much difference in 32 inch but contrast ratio make lot of difference. Contrast of 32LK450 is 1,00,000:1 compared to 30,000:1 of 2 models suggested by u.

Its a good idea to buy from bangalore. Just check price @ 2-3 stores before finalizing the deal..Am sure u will get good deal. BR

Hi Nitin, I enquired about the above LG models in many shops in Bangalore. All told me that those models are stopped now and new models have arrived with almost same configurations. But Price is also more than those old models. So, I had to go for Panasonic. Finally, I ended up buying Panasonic 32″ LDC L32C30D for just 24K.
Brief Specifications of that model:
HD Support
Internet Support
32 inch LCD Display
3 HDMI Ports (1 Side and 2 Rear)
IPS Alpha LCD Panel
20000:1 Dynamic Ratio
Only dissappointment for me in this is the Contrast Ratio. Apart from that everything else is very good in it. And for 24K I don’t think I could have got better LCD than this.

Whats ur say in this ragard? Have I bought the best one for 24K or ….?

Thanks,
Arjun

Dear Mahesh,

You may go ahead with LG 32 CS560, its a new model. You can also check for LG 32LK430 or 32LK450 model which have better specification compared to LG 32CS560 but LG has discontinued both the models. 32LK430 and 32LK450 are cheaper than 32CS560. These models are out of stock at many places..You can check for these models if u can get else you can go ahead with LG 32 CS560. You don’t have any other choice as there is only 1 model in 32 inch category which is Full HD. I will not recommend samsung as i explained in my post the reasons for same.

Thanks

Hi Mahesh,

You need to check whether your TV is smart TV or not then only i can comment on utility of Internet connectivity.

No internet connectivity is as simple that your TV can only be used for TV viewing.

Connectivity via LAN means u need to pull internet or broadband cable till TV to connect in LAN port available in TV..Its as good as connecting internet LAN cable with ur laptop or desktop.

In wireless ready TV, u need not to pull cable but u need to buy wireless adapter from ur TV manufacturer..Its nothing but wireless router/receiver. With the help of wireless adapter you can connect your TV wireless/remotely with router of ur internet service provider.

In the absence of Smart TV feature, by connecting ur TV with internet either through LAN or wireless adapter u can convert ur TV panel into monitor so u can watch You tube video etc but if ur TV is smart TV then u can access applications provided by TV manufacturer through internet connectivity..Its as good as mobile apps on ur phone which u can use to access content through GPRS or 3G connection on mobile

Tks

As i explained in my article you can go ahead with LCD & to add being costly doesn’t mean being the Best.

I will recommend IPS Panel of LG over PVA panel used by Samsung & Sony. If u r planning to buy 32″ inch TV then u can go ahead with HD ready also becoz 32″ inch Full HD models are not of much use. For true HD experience, you can buy 40 inch or above.

Another important point to consider is dynamic contrast ratio, some manufacturer like Samsung don’t reveal real value but according to my research, samsung’s dynamic contrast ratio is between 60k:1 to 70k:1 whereas LG’s dynamic contrast ratio is 1 Lac:1

Smart TV’s only show applications provided by manufacturer but u can use ur LCD TV as monitor by connecting to ur laptop and computer then u can use yahoo, skype etc. Just check whether model selected by u has LAN port or is wireless ready depending on ur requirement. If u r looking for specific applications then u can ask the manufacturer manual to check whether applications required by u are available or not.

I will not recommend you to go for TV with 3D support. Reason being 3D technology is currently at nascent stage in India & there is no content available in 3D except videocon dth has 1 channel in 3D. Moreover 32 inch 3D TV is of no use. For 3D experience, u need atleast 55 inch TV.

If u wish to buy from above 2 model only then u should buy Sony KDL32HX750.

2 Points, Firstly this model has issue of clouding and flash lighting bleeding on edges and secondly LED TV’s are not meant for true gaming experience though they claim so If u r buying exclusively for Gaming then you shud buy LED Gaming Monitor designed specifically for true gaming experience.

If u wish to buy only TV for gaming then go for Plasma TV as they are considered to be best for gaming experience but a word of caution, continuous gaming on Plasma can cause burn issues.

H Nitin, thanks for a wonderful detailed explanation on steps to consider while buying TV. Based on the points noted by you, we checked some models & shortlisted LG 32CS560 (LCD) & LG 32LS460 (LED)..

Frankly, we are die-hard SONY family, but after looking at screens at 32″ size, there was not a big difference in Sony, Samsung & LG.

Can you please suggest from the above two models, I have read in some review that LCD one has only 2 HDMI ports, but SA insists there are 3 ports. Can you please help us out. Or if you can suggest any other model also, it would be fine.

Thanks for reading such a long query.

Hi,

You may go ahead with LG 32CS560 as LED or LCD doesn’t matter in 32 inch TV’s. This model has 3 HDMI ports (2 rear and 1 on side panel).Tks

Dear Nitin Ji,

I am planning to purchase Samsung 32″ Model EH5330 (Smart TV). I am a music lover. Can my requirement for enhanced good quality music as well as other general connectivity can be met with this unit. Please guide me for a good piece of music system costing around Rs.2500-3000) as I do not want to spend more on this account.

Thanks for the help.

Dear Sir,

Samsung 32EH5330 is a good buy but to be honest with u, please don’t expect best quality music from this model. For your music requirement you should buy Philips DSP 2500W 5.1 Speakers from ebay. Though MRP is around 7k but from ebay you will get it for 3000 Rs. I am using the same speakers with my DVD player for music or watching movies on DVD player. Just a word of caution, you cannot use these speakers to connect with TV, if u have Tata Sky HD or Airtel HD then u should buy 7.1 channel speaker to connect to HD box so that you can use speakers for TV viewing also.

Hi Nitin,
My bedroom is 20x14x12 (lxhxb).I have 2 windows on the right side.I have two viewing distances:7ft and 5ft.
My requirements are:
1) Excellent picture and audio quality with no motion lag with vivid and true life like colors.
2) Will watch HD movies (both 720p and 1080p), DTH (HD and SD channels) and sometimes hook it to my PC for gaming. It should do a good job rendering SD channels without artifacts and pixellations at both my viewing distances.
3) I have a strict budget is strictly Rs 35000.
4)Should play a wide variety of formats without hassles.
5) Good after sales.

So,please suggest me the best possible size for my room and viewing distances where I can enjoy all the content I mentioned, fully.

Will be buying this Diwali. Also suggest HD DTH to full enjoy with it.

Hi,

Considering your viewing distance. You should go for 32 inch (7ft distance) or 26 inch (5ft distance). For gaming, you should go atleast 46 inch TV else you will not get true gaming experience.

Considering your requirement, u may go for either LG 32LD460 or Samsung LA32B650T1R or Sony KLV-32NX520 in same order of preference. According to feedback from my readers, after sale service of LG is better.

Quality wise best HD DTH is Tata Sky but it is costly and service is slight concern still i will recommend Tata Sky only. 2nd preference is Airtel.

Hi Nitin ,

With the price difference between LEDs and LCDs reducing over the years , is it true that the LCD Televisions will no longer be manufactured in next couple of years. In such a case ,considering
that some of the spares may become obselete in next 3-4 years , it may not be a viable option to purchase LCD televisions .

Considering the above , I have shortlisted low end LED television models of Samsung and LG – Samsung UA40EH5000R LED TV and LG 42LS3400 to be purchased immediately. The advantage of Samsung over LG in this case is that it has 2 HDMI ports. Can you please suggest the appropriate model I can go for considering that I dont want Smart TV or 3D features in the LED. Also suggest if any other brands can be considered.

Hi Sameer,

Just to add LCD or LED belong to same family of LCD TV. They are almost same in terms of technology except screen illumination. LCD illumination is considered to be better technology compared to LED illumination.

If u have to select between 2 models suggested by u then i will recommend LG 42LS3400 but if u specifically need 2 HDMI ports then u can go ahead with samsung one. Just to add 1 HDMI port can be used interchangeably between DTH or Home Theater.

Thanks

Out of models shortlisted by u, the best one is LG 42LV3730 but it is discontinued. Just check if u get this model else my 2nd preference is LG 42LS5700. I will not recommend any other model besides mentioned by me in order of preference.

Also to add that manufacturers normally de-sell LCD TV’s as they want to sell LED TV so just check other dealers for 32CS560. Tks

Within 42k budget you will get very good choice in 32 inch segment but if u r specifically looking for 42 inch then u need to shell out more for LG & Samsung. LG & Samsung will cost between 45k-50k (LCD) but u can get options of 42 inch in emerging brands like Haier or Toshiba within 42k.

Dear Dinesh,

Sony does not use IPS panels in its models. Sony models come with PVA panel. For 179 degree viewing angle, u have to purchase IPS panel. For wide viewing 179 degree angle and to fulfill ur requirement, u may go ahead with LG 42 LM 6200 or 42 LM 6400 or 42 LM 7600. These models come with IPS panels

As mentioned by me in my post that LED or LCD does not make any difference while viewing. You can decide on 32 inch or 40 inch based of viewing distance. If viewing distance is 7-8 feet then go for 32 inch and if it is between 10-12 feet the 40 inch will be suitable for ur requirement. In 32 inch, u may go for LG32CS560 or or Sony 32CX420. In 40 inch, u may choose between LG 42LK430 or LG 42CS560.

I will not recommend you to buy LG 50PT560R becoz quite surprisingly its not a full HD model i.e. resolution is only 1024 x 768. With 50 inch screen, this model might not throw good picture quality as it is only HD ready. Secondly, plasma TV’s in India have issue of Image Retention. Image retention is an image appearing on a plasma screen after a still picture is displayed for an extended period of time.

Lastly plasma TV’s are more suitable for gaming, if u wanna use it extensively for gaming then u may go ahead with plasma TV. Just a caution, even too much gaming on Plasma may cause burn.

Reply to  Manohar

Dear Manohar, I hope you are accounting import duty in cost. In my opinion, after adding import duty price differential will be minimal.

There is no import duty if u r carrying items worth 25000 INR. Any amount above this attract 37% of the cost as import duty. Usually the prices are defined by the officers on duty not the bills you carry. For e.g. if cost of your TV is Rs 45000 and free limit is Rs 25000. I am assuming you are not carrying any other item. In this case you need to pay import duty of 37% on Rs 20000 (Rs 45000 – Rs 25000).

As you have not mentioned country of purchase therefore i can’t comment whether International Warranty is provided in that country or not. Also you need to check from country of purchase whether international warranty is applicable in India or not as sometimes, they exclude some countries from international warranty e.g. International Warranty on Samsung TV in Singapore is not valid in India.

Depending on your requirement u may go for Smart TV or IR keyboard. Regarding 3D, i would like to add that in India 3D content is at very nascent stage and will take long to kick off.

Hope i answered your query.

Hi Nitin,

After reading this useful article, I did some 4 or 5 rounds of watching Sony, LG, Samsung, etc., LED TVs at different shops in the past 1 month. I could not convey myself to buy LG. The Sony and Samsung LED TVs are very bright and attractive. Why are the LG TVs look very dull? Is it the maximum brightness or contrast of LG which looks dull when compared to Sony or Samsung? (FYI, I went twice to Croma store Anna Nagar, Chennai.)

In terms of IPS Panel, Panasonic too has IPS Panel. Do you still think LG is superior than Panasonic? What do you think or heard about LG Customer Service?

I am really very confused yaar :-( Planning to buy 32″ LED TV with very good picture quality and high refresh rate. I don’t want 3D TV. But, I think the SMART options will be useful in the recent future, if not now.

Thanks,

Hi Mani, It is common trick of stores to de-sell particular brand. You can request store executive to show demo of all 3 TV’s in Store Demo Setting (Every TV has an option of Store Demo setting). Might becoz of differential setting, LG might be looking dull.

In my opinion LG pic quality is much better compared to Panasonic and Customer service is much better compared to others. Even Samsung is good in customer care.

Just to add that in 32 inch segment LCD or LED does not make difference. You may consider LCD also.

Hope i answered your queries.
